Horrible Websites

Are you guilty of having a horrible website?

If you answered yes, you’re in good company. The internet is littered with horrible websites. Badly designed, terribly written, clichéd, hard to use…

Frankly, up until August 2014 I was guilty. My website was ugly and uncompelling.

I think Horrible Website Syndrome comes from the panic we feel to get on the web. Everyone else is after all, so let’s slap some stuff together and throw it up. Whew. Done.

The jury is still out for me on whether a horrible website is better than no website at all. That’s a discussion for another day … but I can tell you that there’s no excuse for either.

There are two key ingredients to building an awesome website: information and emotion. For your brand to resonate you need to tell your audience what you can do for them and you need to motivate them to care.

Make a connection. Tell your story with words and pictures … simply and honestly.

If you aren’t thrilled with your website, make a plan to fix it.

(Note: My journey out of the horrible was inspired by a Seth Godin blog on great websites. It’s included later in the newsletter or by clicking this little link http://ow.ly/IGWaS )
